Italian and Then Some
This is my response to the Ragtag Daily Prompt of 21 June 2018 — Italian.
Some of you may know that I have recently joined a Bush Poetry group. As this month’s theme for my Group is “Italian” and as I’ve only so much time, I thought “Italian” would make a good Ragtag Daily Prompt as well (it’s my day to be the Prompter). Bush poetry is a style of poetry that depicts the life, character and scenery of Australia, employing a straightforward rhyme structure. It uses language that is colourful, colloquial and idiomatically Australian. Well, I’m new to bush poetry or any poetry, so I found it difficult to write a poem in that style, consistent with the theme, but here is my attempt. My poem (below), “Italian and Then Some”, is about the experience of Italian migrants in Australia under the White Australia Policy. Read more

Going With The Flow
WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge — Liquid
The theme for the WordPress Weekly Challenge theme is “liquid”. In responding to the Challenge, my main criterion was that the focus of the photo should be on the water/liquid rather than on the other elements within the photo. So Many Banksias
WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge — Prolific
I had decided not to enter this week’s photo challenge, but changed my mind today as I had the very good fortune to visit the amazingly beautiful Australian National Botanic Gardens. To my delight, there were many plants in full bloom. My little phone camera struggled with some of the smaller, more delicate flowers, but it absolutely loved the banksias. There is such a huge variety of banksias, and many were flowering prolifically. I hope you like them as much as my camera did. Read more
I Am a Folk Festival
This is the last in my series of National Folk Festival (the Nash) posts. The title of this post is taken from Canberra poet, Josh Inman’s poem, ‘I Am a Folk Festival‘, that I heard him perform at the Nash last weekend. Josh said that the moment he steps through the gate he gets a shiver, a sense of freedom. This perfectly sums up the way I feel about the Nash. Josh said ordinary people live ordinary lives. But the Nash is extraordinary. It makes everything seem possible. We can be extraordinary. So, he would rather be a folk festival. That really spoke to me. I can be a folk festival too. Is that too corny? I guess you had to be there. Read more
