This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge — Horizontal Lines.
I thought I would take the plunge and have a go at one of Cee’s photo challenges. Thanks for the encouragement, Cee. I enjoy writing. It is good exercise for my brain, but it is a bit like hard work. But how much fun is photography!
In Aussie land we have the “Tweet of the Week” on our ABC Radio National. Anyone interested in playing that game with bird photos? What type of bird is this?
Also check out Dawnbird’s bird ID challenge in the comments below.
Kind Regards
Tracy

That’s an interesting sun-filled photo Tracy, and your question has generated quite a bit of discussion here. We can’t reach a consensus!

I’ve already given a clue in the post. So I’ll let you think about that for a bit. 🙂

We think it’s a Sacred Kingfisher.

It certainly is. 🙂 The photo was taken at my mother’s house in central Queensland, but we do get the odd one around here too.

We haven’t seen any here, but we used to see Azure Kingfishers occasionally out at the farm.

The Azures are startlingly rare here. My son saw one about five years ago and the local birding community was a-twitch with excitement (excuse the pun). A couple of other sightings have occurred since then. They are so beautiful.

Oh dear, my son decided to check the photo again, and now he says it is a Forest Kingfisher. How embarrassing is that!

That was actually my first thought, but I was swayed by your title! You have some impressive twitchers in your family.

Sorry for leading you astray. If I am going to ask the question, I had better know the answer first. Heehee. The lads are a bit clever. My son wants to go to Mudgee now to see the Azures.

You have to be very lucky to see one!

Looks like a Sacred Kingfisher to me.

Dawnbird, my son consulted the bird book and he has changed his mind. He says it is the Forest Kingfisher. I need a new post title, dammit.

How interesting! I’ve never come across that before.

I thought I’d take up your challenge! (Hope I’m not breaching blogging etiquette by placing my details here. I don’t know how else to link it).

I thought Kingfisher but wasn’t sure which one, now I see from comments there is a bit of divided opinion. Nice photo

My son (he with the good eyes) led me astray, Pauline. 🙂 But thankfully we’ve all reached a consensus.
