Book Review: Our Life Off the Grid – An Urban Couple Goes Feral (by J. David Cox)

offgridDavid Cox and Sally Davies escape the rat race of Vancouver and corporate careers for life on a remote island in British Columbia, Canada.  Think of it as a mid-life crisis or perhaps even an epiphany.  There isn’t much that Dave can’t learn from a book or the internet, or through trial and error.  So Dave and Sally set out to self-build a house on a steep and difficult site on the tip of a peninsula (ie. no road access).  Much of the book is devoted to the trials, tribulations and joys of remote living and the characters that form part of Dave and Sally’s remote community.  Sound boring?  It isn’t. Pool Party

This is my response to the Ragtag Daily Prompt of Saturday, 21 July 2018 — Duck.

I’m very sad to say that for most of my children’s lives, we had neither the money, time or energy to go on holiday together.  Certainly, my husband and I rarely had holidays together as we took turns to take time off work to look after the children during the school holidays.  The lack of family holidays is one of my biggest regrets in life.  A few years ago, my husband and the boys went on a road trip around Victoria (Australia).  I stayed home (with flu), and sent my little ducklings off with their dad on a great adventure. On my last visit to the National Folk Festival, (Canberra), I met Grey.  He owns this pad which is his home away from home when he travels to festivals.  He leaves his “campervan” unlocked so anyone can check it out as they wander past.  Read more
