Part 2 of my contribution to the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge, Own Choice and One Image/One Story theme. In this case, it is one photo, three different ways. Check it out.
My True Love and my eldest son recently went on a spotlighting expedition. I stayed home because my night vision is poor and the terrain they were covering is very steep. They went into Greater Glider territory. Greater Gliders are nocturnal. They live in the trees, nesting in tree hollows, and can glide up to 100 metres at a time. I expect the Greater Glider will soon be listed as endangered given the impact of the deadly 2019/2020 Australian bushfires and ongoing land clearing across their range. It was a successful night. The lads came home with a photo of eye shine.

I’ve been learning some nifty PS edits. I added the arrow to the photo! Night photography is not our forté. But hey, this is not a David Attenborough documentary, so we make do. Next, I lightened the image. Ta da!

Let’s get closer.

Here’s what they really look like.

I hope you enjoyed this night out.
Kind Regards.
Tracy.

You have so many amazing creatures there Tracy – this is yet another one I’d never heard of. Good for them for spotting it, and thanks to you for sharing it with us.

I’d never heard of the Great Glider either! I thought in the night photo it looked like a fish (but I knew that couldn’t be!).

The blue colouring was a bit of a red herring. 🤣

Thanks, Tina. More a boys own adventure story than a photo essay, but I hope it is enough to pique people’s curiosity.

This is brilliant! I love this night shot, that little eye keeping a watch out on the night intruders. The arrow and subsequent photos really show the animal taking shape. An all round family success!

😄 Just goes to show that you don’t need fantastic photos to keep people entertained, Heather.

They might have taken the photo, but it takes the editor to bring it to light. So to speak.

The lads are not as good at yarn spinning as I am, Lois. If they practised though ….

What a capture! I had never heard of these, but they are very beautiful. So many species are threatened, I want to save them all.

Heehee, you’re kind, AC. Seeing those eyes does make you want to see more. Not protecting /saving them, and all the other endangered animals, seems completely intolerable to me.

It is. Intolerable.

They”re a good bunch. ❤ All animals are the best. Maybe not midges and mozzies but even they are vital.

I draw the line at deer flies except as they are food for dragonflies.

Great editing Tracy. I’ve never heard of these little creatures either.

Thanks, Pauline. The Greater Gliders live up your way. I understand they live in the ranges, not at sea level. Like their southern cousins, their habitat has been decimated.

Sadly most of our natives are struggling to survive

Thanks for sharing this adventure with us Tracy. Are these animals nocturnal? It was great to let us see them in the day time. Take care and have a wonderful holiday season.

Yes, they are nocturnal, Anne, and it is difficult to get near them before they glide away.

Sounds exciting to start with the photo with a tiny light spot, and uncovering the source as you edit. Thanks for sharing your and your family’s explorations.

The lads had fun. They gof a much better view of them then the camera could feasibly show. There was more detail in the photo than I expected.
Merry Christmas to you, Irene.
