30 Dec 2026 – A Christmas wish and a possum tale.

We are fairly certain that Junior Miss has been very naughty this year.

Not me!

I’m so hot!

Brush-tailed possums wee on themselves and lick their paws to cool down. It is currently 33oc in the tinny.

No matter the time of year, a kind word and a kind deed are worth more than all the riches in the world. My TL and I hope you spread your warmth and kindness generously over the festive period and we wish you all the very best for 2026.

Kind Regards.

Tracy

  2. Our Tasmanian possums have to worry more about keeping warm and dry and not blown out of their hidey holes. They were quite active before Christmas with several mums and bubs visiting our garden. Most of the babies were off mum’s back by then. They are a bit elusive now because of holiday visitors in the neighbourhood which is usually very quiet. We might not see much of them till February.

      1. As far as we can tell from observing them they seem to give birth in late autumn or early winter. They start appearing with the joeys in the pouch November and by Christmas the joeys are usually off mums back at least some of the time. Naomi sees them more often because she uses the bathroom off our laundry which is in a separate building.

      2. Some of the joeys become independent quite young. Either something happens to mum or she is happy to let baby explore alone and is nearby. Edna, a mother possum who lives in or near our garden has had at least three joeys since we first saw her. She usually keeps them with her until she has another one in the pouch. The females apparently do often stay near the mothers in adulthood but the males go further away and come back for mating time. Edna’s baby from 2 years ago, “Baby” has just had her second joey. In both cases, last year and this year Naomi has seen Edna looking after her grandbabies. She even allows them to take her food.

      1. Oh, dear. I hope she shows up again. We had fireworks so close to us last night. I cannot imagine who, because we are surrounded by dog people.
