How Fabulous is Deborah Conway?

Day 30 — Share Your Music: 30 Days, 30 Songs

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve made it to the end of the 30 Days, 30 Songs challenge.  It has been epic.  My special thanks go to my friend, Sarah, of Art Expeditions, for hosting the challenge and to all those who contributed their favourite songs.  My thanks also go to my readers for the enthusiasm they have shown for my music choices.  I have tried to give a balanced representation of the songs that have touched my heart.  Not easy to do in the space of 30 songs/tunes.

On the drive home from an outing today, my husband and I got chatting about great concerts we had seen, which then turned into a conversation about the great concert we missed due to a medical emergency (mine).  Anyway that concert was a Deborah Conway / Willy Zygier concert.  At that moment, I decided my final song choice would be Man Overboard by 80s Aussie rock band, Do Re Mi – with Deborah Conway singing lead vocals.

Man Overboard was co-written by band members: Deborah Conway, Dorland Bray, Helen Carter and Stephen Philip.  It is song writing at its gritty best.  Man Overboard is about women putting up with men’s shit.  Well, that’s how I interpret it.

I’ve included two clips of the song.  The first clip tells the story in song and pictures, and has the best sound quality.  The second clip includes the lyrics.  All I can say is how good were Do Re Mi, and how good is Deborah Conway!  Maybe she and her partner, Willy Zygier, will come back to Canberra again.  I hope so, otherwise I will never hear the end of it.

Enjoy.

Standing Up For Peace

Day 29 — Share Your Music: 30 Days, 30 Songs

Music — it represents the sum of our lives.  Think of any aspect of human emotion or endeavour and there has probably been a song written about it.  Songs can unite or divide.  Just as there are war songs, there are also songs of protest and peace.  I prefer to call the latter, songs of kindness.   Every year I feel the love at Canberra’s National Folk Festival.  It is there that I first heard many of the songs that I have shared over the 30 days of this music challenge.  This year I had the very great privilege to attend the Festival’s Concert for Peace.  The concert was a call to action and an opportunity to honour the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (otherwise known as ICAN). Day 28 — Share Your Music: 30 Days, 30 Songs

Ladies and gentlemen, I am up to the penultimate post to the penultimate post of the 30 Days, 30 Songs challenge.  Yes, just three days to go.  I’ll keep it short and sweet.  I watched one of my favourite comedy shows this week and the comedians made the point that:

Reveling In Ravel

Day 27 — Share Your Music: 30 Days, 30 Songs

Fond memories, ladies and gentlemen.  Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Clarinet, Flute and Strings brought to an end my classical phase.  I re-visit it every now and then.  What could be more beautiful?  Hear the instruments sing.

And To Spain

Day 26 — Share Your Music:  30 Days, 30 Songs

This music challenge is getting so difficult.  It is a case of which of all my favourite pieces will I leave out.  Does this mean that I love the ones I omit any less?  No, of course not. So my choice for Day 26 is Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.  Maybe it will be new to some of my readers.  I’ve chosen the slow movement again.  I don’t have to be original.

Enjoy.

Climate Mitigation Song

Day 25 — Share Your World: 30 Days, 30 Songs

Dear Readers, I fear my choice of song today might be a tad insensitive.  I have just read the news headlines about the heatwave in Europe.  So please do not take my song choice personally.  It is Light My Fire by The Doors.  I chose it because I can’t get warm in my part of the world.

Any suggestions for really warm indoor and/or outdoor boots would be greatly appreciated.

An Inspiration For Many

Day 24 — Share Your Music:  30 Days, 30 Songs

An inspiration for many.  Gone too soon (like many talented artists before and after her).  This is for all the Patsy Cline fans out there.

Sing along with me.

Happy Day – Red Shirt Day

Day 23 — Share Your Music: 30 Days, 30 Songs

Ladies and gentlemen, I have had a change of heart about my song selection for Day 23 of the 30 Days, 30 Songs music challenge.  I think we need a happy song.  I’ve chosen Red Shirt Day by Seaman Dan.  Seaman Dan wrote Red Shirt Day after overhearing a barmaid say that she wore red to cheer herself up when working on a Sunday.

Seaman Dan was born in 1929 on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait.  Over his lifetime he has worked as a cattle hand, pearl diver and a ship’s captain, before giving all that up to become a recording star.  Seaman Dan started his recording career at age 70.  He has the distinction of being the oldest ARIA award winner.  In March this year he was honoured at the Queensland Music Awards with the Grant McLennan Lifetime Achievement Award.  He turns 90 years of age in August.

I first heard Seaman Dan perform at Canberra’s National Folk Festival in 2007.  That was my first or second year attending the festival.  Seaman Dan came and sang with our massed choir.  It was so much fun and he was an absolute delight.  Those were the days.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy his song.  I’ve included two links in the hope that you can access at least one of them.  The singing begins just before the 2 minute mark in the second clip.

Oh Joy, New Song – Let It Out

Day 22 — Share Your Music:  30 Days, 30 Songs

Here we go again.  Day 22 of the 30 Days, 30 Songs challenge.  To think, yesterday I was ready to call it quits.  I’m so tired.  Too much singing, dancing and thinking over the last three weeks.  My fitness level is not good.  Remind me never to do that 30 day poetry challenge, Nopepoem, or whatever it is called.  However, I’ve nearly made it to the end of this  month long song challenge, so I’ve decided to keep going.

I am going to share with you a song that I’ve only heard once!  Today.  It was love at first hearing.  It made me cry.  I was going to post another song from the same group, but in the course of questing around for some background information, I learned that Seeker Lover Keeper have just released their first new single in eight years.  Singer-songwriters – Sally Seltmann, Holly Throsby and Sarah Blasko – have got together and got it together again.  The new single is called Let It Out.  That other national treasure, Magda Szubanski, stars in the video clip.   You are going to love it.

I’ll play the other song tomorrow.  It comes with a story.  Anyway, time for some music.

A Wee Tune

Day 21 — Share Your Music:  30 Days, 30 Songs

Short admin note – Dear Readers, it seems that my comments on people’s posts have been going to spam.  I’m not ignoring you.  I also understand that some of my music videos for this challenge have been unavailable.  This has also happened to other participants of the music challenge.  They can still be found with an internet search.  My apologies though as I know this is a hassle.

Back to the post.

I have yet another instrumental piece lined up.  It is Alesa Lajana playing The Briezh/The Seagull.  This is from her first album, Home Calling.  Her follow-up album seems to be more banjo and singing.  Not that there is anything wrong with the banjo.
