The Returned

A Short Story

The old man slaps his car keys down on the kitchen table. It’s cold inside the house and he is tired. It’s been a long drive in heavy rain. He has to take a slash. His water works need fixing. That’s why he is here. Back in Canberra.

The mobile rings as he is zipping his fly. “H’lo,” he says loudly. It’s his eldest daughter on the line. The cranky one. Of course, it is not the youngest daughter. She doesn’t ring. She is too busy working in the old folks home. His son doesn’t ring much either. If the old man knew how to text, they might communicate more often.

Project Cheer

I came across some Silvereyes visiting a garden in my neighbourhood. Luckily I had my camera with me. The Silvereyes were too busy eating to pay attention to me. By contrast, they nip through my own yard at great speed. That might have something to do with my three dogs of course.

Spatially Challenged

Welcome to my regular Friday song/tune day, ladies and gentlemen, where I pick a piece of music that reflects my mood or the times, to share with you.

How are you feeling today? Are you, like me, feeling sl…ee…py? No that’s not the song I picked for my Friday song day, although it would be very appropriate too. I’m sure you know the one I mean. Yep, I’m feeling oh so tired. Nope, it is not that song either. However, it does feel like I’ve been here for my whole life, never knowing home [and a decent night’s sleep]. In the words of the Little River Band, “I live for the day when I can hear people saying that they know and they care for everyone.”

It’s A Long Way There, so get out your air guitar and let’s get going.

Stay sane, stay kind and give everyone some breathing space.

Kind Regards.
Tracy

You Can Leave Your Mask On

My brain is working overtime, but still I am so confused. I’ve got more questions than answers.

Birds Of A Feather

I was going to write a very long post on a modern ethical dilemma, but because it was long and it involved an ethical dilemma, it is still languishing in draft form. Instead, I am going to dedicate this post to my friends. If I were to list all the reasons why, it would take so long that this post would suffer the same fate. I’m no Elizabeth Barrett Browning. So I’ll make it snappy.

Gash in the Fabric

Welcome to my regular Friday song/tune day, ladies and gentlemen, where I pick a piece of music that reflects my mood or the times, to share with you.

Well scheiße, ladies and gentlemen, what a crappy few weeks it has been downunder. How’s that for an impressive, or pathetic, example of tautology? It has been all about the corona virus (Covid-19) these last couple of weeks. You know the old saying, “Pride goeth …” Hubris, pubis. Australians have been so self-congratulatory about how we got “on top of” the virus. Apparently and allegedly, all the time we thought our borders were closed, our borders weren’t actually closed, if you know what I mean …

Peace of Mind

Hello dear readers, I hope you are all of sound mind and body. If not, and even if you are, you will love Mark Berkery’s nature blog, Nature’s Place. Mark is a gifted photographer and exponent of macro photography. His photographic subjects are primarily insects, spiders and other small critters. His photos are exquisite. Mark is also a firm believer in nature’s healing power and combines this with meditation. If insects, macro photography and/or meditation interest you, go check out Mark’s blog. For those of you who live in Southeast Queensland (Australia), Mark is proposing some meet-ups in a public park. So if you are looking for a bit of quiet time (an hour or so) in the great outdoors and would like to go along, check out the details of the meet-up here. Fostering good mental health is a very important part of learning to live with Covid-19. Mark is doing his bit to help others who may be struggling.

I do not know Mark personally, and cannot vouch for the actual state of his mind, so readers must make their own judgement regarding the bona fides of the invitation. Whatever you decide, definitely check out his blog. It is fantastic.

Kind Regards.
Tracy.

The Changing Seasons – June 2020

Winter in the nation’s capital (Canberra, Australia) — A little chilly, sometimes grey, a few warming rays in the afternoon. The virus? An ominous breakout in one state to the south jerks people out of complacency. Canberra is virus-free for the moment. We wait. We take photos of birds. It keeps us sane.
