Hear hear! In the UK, there are those who tend to have selective memories about the war, and forget the contribution made by what was then ‘The Empire’. Memories get even more selective when it comes to the contribution of the non-white original populations of those countries.

I’ve never heard mention of this breadth of contributions in our ANZAC commemorations. I wonder if this history is even covered in any detail at the Australian War Memorial. I must ask my friend who works there.

Yes indeed! Too much important history from often-forgotten communities is itself forgotten.

Thank you for sharing this article, Tracy. I read it with a great deal of interest. It’s so important to honor ALL who served in the name of freedom.

The article is a good reminder that these wars and peace keeping campaigns were a team effort, and there were many treated poorly after their help was no longer required.

An excellent post. So many gave their all and so many returned to their homes shattered. I was researching our family and was intrigued that one great uncle was considered to be a useless drunk. How surprised was I to find that he had served with the RAN Bridging Train at Gallipoli. This involved building ‘piers’ for moving cargo from ship to shore. Imagine being out in the open, and not knowing when you would be ‘picked off’. I only hope that he found some solace in the bottle.

What a job!!! That character assassination was completely undeserved. Your great uncle was a hero. He should have received a Victoria Cross at the very least, even if he did need a few stiff drinks to front up to the task.

You can have so many versions of one event and unfortunately there are groups that never have their voice heard. A thoughtful post.
