30 Dec 2026 – A Christmas wish and a possum tale.
We are fairly certain that Junior Miss has been very naughty this year.

Brush-tailed possums wee on themselves and lick their paws to cool down. It is currently 33oc in the tinny.
No matter the time of year, a kind word and a kind deed are worth more than all the riches in the world. My TL and I hope you spread your warmth and kindness generously over the festive period and we wish you all the very best for 2026.
Kind Regards.
Tracy
Possums are Possums cute but smelly. Want to catch me and pick me up as I am so cute, here let me wee on you.

Possums aren’t a favourable addition to a household down here. All the best for 2026. Double wishes 😁

Thanks, Suzanne. I understand possums are a serious pest in NZ and that they kill off a lot of wildlife. For that reason, I have a pair of possum socks that were made in NZ.
Ditto.

Those socks will keep your toes nice and toasty.

All the very best to you and yours, Tracy, and as for Junior Miss, how chilled can you get 🙂

I’m not sure I am finding their habits endearing but … so far AI has not yet added “smell” to its feature.

Haha, it is bound to happen. When they get into the roof cavity of people’s houses and wee on the ceiling, endearing is not the term people use to describe them.

Our Tasmanian possums have to worry more about keeping warm and dry and not blown out of their hidey holes. They were quite active before Christmas with several mums and bubs visiting our garden. Most of the babies were off mum’s back by then. They are a bit elusive now because of holiday visitors in the neighbourhood which is usually very quiet. We might not see much of them till February.

I imagine they seek out fireplaces when it gets a bit chilly for them in Tassie, Vanda. Is February when they normally bring their new babies around?

As far as we can tell from observing them they seem to give birth in late autumn or early winter. They start appearing with the joeys in the pouch November and by Christmas the joeys are usually off mums back at least some of the time. Naomi sees them more often because she uses the bathroom off our laundry which is in a separate building.

Interesting. That’s probably why Baby Possum showed up on its own recently. It was very snarly to Junior Miss but Junior Miss wasn’t giving up her territory.

Some of the joeys become independent quite young. Either something happens to mum or she is happy to let baby explore alone and is nearby. Edna, a mother possum who lives in or near our garden has had at least three joeys since we first saw her. She usually keeps them with her until she has another one in the pouch. The females apparently do often stay near the mothers in adulthood but the males go further away and come back for mating time. Edna’s baby from 2 years ago, “Baby” has just had her second joey. In both cases, last year and this year Naomi has seen Edna looking after her grandbabies. She even allows them to take her food.

Thank you, Lois. Junior Miss has not showed up the last two days. We are a bit worried about her. Perhaps she is still celebrating the new year. She may also have been terrified by the illegal fireworks, but let’s not go there. Stay safe.

Oh, dear. I hope she shows up again. We had fireworks so close to us last night. I cannot imagine who, because we are surrounded by dog people.

Exactly. We can always clean the tub out if the smell gets too bad.
Stay well, Anne.
