Just imagine a young nature loving Aussie bloke was travelling overseas to Europe for the first time in a few weeks time but had not organised his flights or itinerary, or anything really, nor done any research, etc, what would you suggest he could do that fill up about five days or so?
So far all that I know that has been organised is a flight to London to visit the Kew Botanic Gardens and the Natural History Museum. Then somehow he is to make his way to Switzerland to see his friend and a dipper. Then do something else before flying out to Singapore, a destination for which he hasn’t even booked a flight!
Is this the way of grown men with little travel experience? Anyway, any suggestions for must sees? Plants and wildlife being the key attraction. Let’s not mention the crappy exchange rate. I’ve suggested he take a suitcase of protein bars and chocolate.
Thoughts?
First I suggest he make his reservations for the Eurostar asap if he plans takng the train. A great information website is “The Man in Seat 61” lots of good advice about train and ferry travel in the UK and Europe. There are lots of good walkng trails in the UK too if he likes that sort of thing. Yorkshire, The Peak District or closer to London he might try visiting the south coast.
I will be in London next month and plan to explore the canals. Regents Canal runs through the city and there is a Canal Museum near Kings Cross Station. Tell him to try to book tickets for things he wants to do on.ine. Days are already filling up.

Thanks, Vanda. Hope you have a great time on your holiday. My son is going at about same time as you. I’m sure he will find somewhere to base himself for that week. The choice is immense hence decision paralysis could be a risk.

I know. I started booking things a couple of months ahead and even then some were unavailable on the days I wanted. Still there are probably always no shows so some places where you can just walk in.

Just my thoughts Tracy. He’s young, resourceful, and may not know what he’s looking for. But, in the back of his mind, and he may not admit it, he still has mom and dad. He will be fine, but keep your credit card handy!

He will be. My mother still worries about me, so I guess I shouldn’t feel too guilty about worrying about him.

Of course. My youngest has two teenagers and I still worry about him.

He needs to start saving his pennies as Kew is expensive! Without knowing how long he’s spending in the UK, it’s hard to make suggestions. Taswegian has good suggestions. Actually if the natural world is his thing, a capital city of almost 9 million people may not be the place to start. Happy to throw ideas into the pot if he wants, before he sets forth.

Probably only a few days in the UK, Margaret. If I was him, I would have hightailed it to Scotland after I had landed in the UK. But his friend in Switzerland is on a schedule so he couldn’t hang around there.

Me too. Could be his last chance…
I’m feeling very negative about the world. That’s why I say very little these days.

It’s appallingly easy to feel negative these days. My default position too.

Kew and the NHM are great. Can also recommend the Chelsea Physic Garden, which is a short hop on the tube from the NHM. The rest of London I can pretty much live without…..

Thanks, Darren. That’s very helpful. I’ve passed on your recommendation. It may not surprise you to learn that when the young person goes to Singapore, the Botanic Gardens there is also on the top of his must-see list. 🙂

Hope he has a good visit. I can’t imagine travelling so far just for a few days!

Nor can I. We would be exhausted by the time we arrived, wouldn’t we?

I don’t know. I travel that way. IS there another way? One or two known destination and then?

Yep. I’ve done that too. But I went for six months when I did my one and only overseas trip. He’s only going for three weeks, one of which involves sitting on planes. Also apparently over-crowding is a huge problem now.

As long as he doesn’t get anywhere near the US, he should be fine.

Yeah, only billionaires need apply to go to the US. Sorry that is so shithouse there at the moment.

Thank you, Traci. I am so glad I don’t have grandchildren.

I feel the same. Very defeatist but the worry is so tiring.

It’s exhausting, constantly waiting for the other shoes to drop.

Don’t worry, Tracy. He will be fine. Some of the best trips are unplanned.
