It is Day 2 of the 30 Days, 30 Songs! Challenge being hosted by Sarah from Art Expeditions, and therefore time for my next song pick.

I have been waiting for Sarah’s post because I often need a little inspiration from others before my brain clicks into gear.  Sarah’s choice is Beautiful Day by U2.  I hadn’t heard that one before, so I looked up the date it was released — 2000.  That explains it.  It was about then that I gave up on popular music.  It might have had something to do with being so exhausted from raising children.  Quality may have been an issue too (disco was dead!).  However, I’m still inspired by Sarah’s U2 theme, so I am going to stick with a variation on that theme.

One of my all time favourite songs is I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.  The song was written by U2 and first released in 1987, but it was not until I heard The Chimes’ version of the song, that it really became an anthem for me.  I am slightly conflicted, but only slightly, because I’ve already posted this song for a blog challenge.  However, you can never have enough of this song.  Trust me, you can sing the melody and harmonies at the same time.  Sing it with me.

  1. Tracy, this is such a beautiful, soulful version of a song that I also love in its original version by U2. Thanks for introducing me to another artist’s interpretation of a song that has always touched my heart. Especially since I haven’t “found it” either…

  3. I love this song so, so much!! I nearly picked it for the challenge because I haven’t found what I’m looking for either. I didn’t know this cover version before but it’s wonderful – and this from someone who can be very opposed to cover versions when I think that they don’t do the original justice. 😉 Thank you for joining this challenge, Tracy – this is such fun! 😄

  5. I love U2 but dislike pretty much any music after the mid-90s and usually don’t like millenniel cover versions of anything because they always try to “improve” them but this I like.

    1. Same, Vanda. All the brilliant songs get covered over and over again, I guess because they are so brilliant. The U2 song is listed as being in the gospel genre, so maybe that is why this version sounds so good. I’ve got The Chimes album (vinyl) and I love it. 🙂

  6. Love this version, brings a different and refreshing energy (as Disturbed did to Sounds of Silence – far more emotion in that version), I now know when I find what I’m looking for I’m soon onto the next thing 🙂

      3. My kids don’t really like covers, but I do, they bring new insight and refresh. With the good ones I think they supersede the originals. Robert Plant’s live version of Rock and Roll with the Sensational Space Shifters in New Mexico is fabulous.

  7. I didn’t expect to like this — and not because it’s a cover per se — but I do. I think there are quite a few songs where other artists’ interpretations beat the originals. Or perhaps they locate them in times and genres that speak to me more?
    I’m loving this challenge!!

      1. I agree with you about the challenge — our music is such a window into our lives.
        I like the cover versions of both of the Simon & Garfunkel songs better than the originals — especially Sounds of Silence. And it is probably a time or genre thing; I was a kid when S&G were writing those songs, and the covers are much more of my time.
