Welcome to my regular Friday song/tune day, ladies and gentlemen, where I pick a piece of music that reflects my mood or the times, to share with you.

The Australian state of Victoria, and its capital city, Melbourne, are doing it tough at the moment. Victorians are sheltering in their homes in a herculean bid to bring down the number of Covid-19 infections. There is everything to love about Victoria. I dedicate my song selection this week, Love Letter, to all Victorians. However, I’m leaving the writing and singing of this love letter to the experts, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

You can do it, Victoria. I have faith in you.

Can’t wait to see you again.

All my love.
Tracy.

  1. Love this song Tracy. We’re starting to be primed for a “second wave” with Victoria being used as an example. Looks like I’m going to be buying/sewing masks by very soon. For the first time we’re being told to have a supply of them.

  2. Victoria and Melbourne were featured on our national news last night. My reaction was great admiration and respect for the extreme actions being taken to prevent this deadly scourge from running rampant, causing untold death and suffering. Keep it up!!

  3. So far no one aged 19 or under has died from Covid-19 in Canada. Social distancing and contact tracing are vital in fighting the spread of the virus. People who persist in going to parties, bars and recreational areas are advised keep track of the people with whom they have had contact to facilitate contact tracing. A recent house party has resulted in about 400 attendees now social isolating for two weeks due to an out break traced to a large party they attended.

  4. As a Melburnian, I thank you for your good wishes. It will be interesting to see how these strict lockdown measures and night curfew (8.00pm-5.00 am) pan out.

The last 2 days have seen the new cases drop almost in half, but it’s way too early to make predictions. Our biggest problem is the nursing homes and aged care with the large cluster at 169 elderly victims in the one home.

I’m remaining optimistic we can get back to minimal, (10?) or even Nil new cases as several other Australian states have shown.

I have a massive amount of respect and admiration for our state Premier having the courage to make these difficult decisions.

    1. Dear Vicky, I hope you are staying dry and cosy. I think the whole nation is looking forward to a drop in Victorian cases. It can’t happen soon enough. I have a lot respect for your premier too. It is not often you hear a leader say that as the leader, they take full responsibility for any mistakes that were made. Usually they try to lay the blame on some lowly public servant. For example, those poor health workers in Tasmania were smeared by politicians who claimed the health workers had been partying, before they checked the facts. Also, at the same time, a leader cannot guarantee that everyone will behave responsibly. That would be micro management in the extreme.
Take care this weekend, Vicky. Hopefully next week will see some light again.

  5. Tracy, I enjoyed Nick Cave’s “Love Letter”. Nick Cave is a new artist to me and I’ll be listening to him on Spotify. May I suggest Sarah Harmer’s ‘’St Peter’s Bay”? Wishing you well! In BC our lock down started in March and recently the Canadian economy is starting its recovery. So far the Canadian government has spent about 400 billion dollars to keep Canada from ‘’going in the tank.” Our national debt is reaching towards one trillion dollars. All political parties agree, some reluctantly, that austerity will be an ineffective strategy for fighting the pandemic. So a high rate of spending continues.

    1. Hi Sid, thanks for the Sarah Harmer recommendation. I liked it very much. I have one of Sarah Harmer’s old albums (You Were Here). I haven’t been playing my CDs for a while now because I’ve only got one reliable CD player and that is in my car. I think I shall sign up to Spotify and download some the newer music of my favourite artists.
I expect Canadian government spending is making a few Canadians nervous, but it does seem necessary at the moment. Australia’s state and federal governments are also spending a lot of money (debt) to support the economy, through wage subsidies and higher unemployment benefits. Makes sense because of the massive private debt levels of Australians which, as a percentage of GDP, exceed that of Canada. (Australia is actually second highest in the world). It will be interesting to see whether the Victorian covid outbreak (and the associated economic fallout) materially increases the risks to the Australian banking sector. There has been much criticism from the federal opposition (Australian Labor Party) about the lack of expenditure on job creation, but I suspect infrastructure spending will come when (not if – being hopeful), community spread of the virus has been contained/eliminated.

  6. Dear Tracy
I wish you all the best to overcome this Corona-crisis soon. Where we are living it’s in to wear fashionable masks. At every corner, amazing designs are offered and one usually owns many designs that go with your wardrobe. We think that’s a good way to make wearing masks attractive.
We wish you good luck and thanks for sharing this song

    1. Thank you, Fab Four, for your well wishes.
The people of Victoria are the most stylish in the whole of Australia, so if anyone can rock the face mask. they can. I am not Victorian so my masks are not quite so stylish, but they do the job. 🙂

  7. In July, when all kinds of business and beaches were opened to public and the July celebrations… The Covid-19 cases in our local city jumped to 1,500 from 100. This week people wear masks and stay at home more…. it got down to 360. Thanks for the beautiful song.

    1. Thanks for your comment, Amy. It is such hard work to bring numbers down, easier to prevent them from going up in the first place. I really for everyone in your community, Amy, especially the elderly in care homes who rely on us all to act sensibly. Take care, Amy. We are doing the same here.
