Nothing New Under The Sun

Shadow and light bobble about.
Southerly blows ahoy there.
Lost at sea, perched on the bough.

Nothing new under the sun.
Hunter alights under star shine.

Imagination skims waves
and braces against rapids ahead.
Ness? Ness pas?
Until set at ease,
bobs along in loch step.

Forty days of quarantine
and still the sky casts forth its rainbow tears.

Winged aloft to dehydration …
Folly alas.
Sun still hot enough to seer.

Hubris.
Nothing new under the sun.

Sorry, readers. I did warn you that it was really awful word play. But how about that raven artwork? 😉

  1. I really liked it. This is probably my favorite of all I’ve read from you so far. Geez, what does that say about me? I guess I like word play 😛 And what kind of bird is that looking all fluffed up? He’s my guy! ❤

    1. Thank you, Lani. 🙂 The bird is a Tawny Frogmouth. Bush Heritage Australia explains that the Tawny Frogmouth species name, strigoides, means owl-like. They’re nocturnal and carnivorous, but Tawny Frogmouths aren’t owls – they’re more closely related to Nightjars.

    1. Thank you, Tina. 🙂 I think that was my best bit. Other parts of the poem make me squirm now, but I’ll fiddle with it later. As you do.
      The bird is a Tawny Frogmouth. It looks like part of the tree. It s a nocturnal bird of prey. Similar to a nightjar. They are unbelievably silent when they hunt.

  9. Tracy–I think the words, the photos, and the artwork are wonderful. That sweet little bird looks like he’s sleeping. Just thinking…but wouldn’t that raven make a beautiful mosaic?

    1. Thank you, Lois. The tawny frogmouth was having a bit of a kip. It was very sweet. My son spotted it (that being rather difficult) and we got a phone call to come and see it. I think it might be possible to make a mosaic of the raven image, but I’ve also been endeavouring to get a silhouette snap for Sarah, just in case she would like it for a T-shirt.

        I am okay. Trying to break the monotony of living like an automaton. Waiting for one good news to break the cycle of bad news from all sides…suicides, riots, deaths (not covid related) and the struggle to survive.

      The Tawny Frogmouth might be a little too difficult to mosaic. Maybe. Perhaps. Probably ….
