It may come as no surprise to you, ladies and gentlemen, that I am not as clever as I think I am.  Now I am in a bit of a pickle corvid-wise.  You see, I have a lot of currawong photos that I hoped to share with you for the Corvid-2020 Weekly Challenge, but eek, I’ve discovered after starting this challenge that currawongs are not actually corvids (of the family Corvidae).  In fact, the only corvids in Australia are the crows and ravens.  Unfortunately, I have limited raven photos.  Do you think that the powers-that-be will consider, in these dark Covid-19 times, the scouring of the city for ravens to be an essential activity?   I guess we shall find out.   I fear I might have to resort to some very bad poetry for this challenge.

The good news is that there are plenty of different species of corvids in other parts of the world with the Corvidae family encompassing ravens, crows, magpies, jays and nutcrackers.  So check out your corvid photo, poetry and story archives and join the challenge.   Aussies, we will just have to make the best of it.  You can participate by creating a pingback to this post (my pingback approval settings are set up for manual approval, so it may take a little while for your pingback to appear) and/or by leaving a hyperlink to your submission in the comments.   Tag your post Corvid-2020 or C20WC.

  1. Ha ha ha! Essential crow hunting! I like it. I read an article in the SMH today about what different countries include as “essential”. I think in the UK it was fish and chips. In France it was pastries, wine and cheese. In the US (some states only) it included guns, golf and ganja. I don’t really know what it is here – beer perhaps. I saw Woollies was limiting alcohol purchases. I think corvidae spotting would be a worthwhile inclusion.

      2. According to news reports last week, the number of background checks for new gun purchases in NH doubled in a month, from over 5,000 to over 10,000. Last night, the news story was that the gun shops are selling out their stock and can’t get enough new stock to keep up with the demand. One more reason to shelter in place.

    2. Fish and chips might prove a bit challenging! I have to buy fresh fish for my dog who is on a special diet for IBD. It is proving difficult as It is a bit dicey on the high seas at the moment. Now golf, that defies credibility!
      I think crow hunting might be the easiest option. It is a very anti-social activity. 🙂

  4. A few years ago we had an invasion of crows around here. Dozens of them set up home in a huge tree across the road and their loud raucous cawing would wake us early and drive us to distraction. Then suddenly, and unexpectedly they disappeared a couple of years ago. Leaving only one pair that would visit our garden periodically. Now they have gone too. Very strange. So good luck with your corvid spotting and careful you don’t get a fine.

  8. Florida is not a stay-at-home state, but all non-essential stores have closed. Grocery and liquor stores remain open. Restaurants are offering take-out and pick-up orders only, but one restaurant got very creative. Between 2pm-5pm every day they offer a happy hour special: bottle of wine and a cheese board featuring various cheeses, nuts, and dried fruit for a special price. How can you have dinner without the appropriate wine?! Take care, Tracy.

  11. Think I’ll have to sit this one out Tracy. I checked whether NZ has any birds of the Corvidae family and found that apart from naturalized rooks, the answer is nope. Both the NZ and Chatham Islands ravens are extinct! 😦

  15. Lots of crows here, Tracy, and I hope to join your essential crow/raven hunt soon. 😉 I’ve been wandering in the neighbourhood last weekend since the weather was great and everyone headed to the parks which were unhealthily crow(!)ded, so made only pics of graffiti and street art.
